IBH OPC UA:Installation on Windows
The IBH OPC UA Server/Client is installed as a 64-bit Windows application. The setup configures the automatically started ibhopcua Windows service, the tray application and the Web Configurator.
Workflow at a glance
- Download the current 64-bit setup.
- Run the setup with administrative privileges.
- Verify the Windows service and tray application.
- Open the Web Configurator and change the default password.
- Activate the license online or offline.
- Configure and test the OPC UA endpoint and controller connections.
Requirements
- Approved 64-bit Windows system; Windows 10 or Windows 11 is recommended for new installations
- Local administrative privileges for installation
- Static IP address or resolvable hostname recommended
- Network access to the configured controllers
- DNS resolution and HTTPS access to the license server for online activation
- Required TCP ports available or configured
- For NodeSets with Python scripts, methods or data models: a system-wide 64-bit installation of Python 3.8 or newer
Before updating an existing installation, create a configuration backup and close the tray application.
Download
Download the current 64-bit setup from the official site:
Use only an installer from a trusted source and verify the IBHsoftec digital signature if required.
Installation
- Sign in with an account permitted to install software.
- Right-click the setup file and select Run as administrator.
- Verify the publisher and confirm the Windows security prompt.
- Follow the installation wizard.
- Keep the proposed installation folder unless your system policy requires another location.
- Complete the installation and restart Windows if requested.
The default folder is:
C:\Program Files\IBH OPC UA Server-Client
The setup installs the ibhopcua service, IBHOpcUATray.exe, the server/client runtime, the Web Configurator and Start menu entries.
Optional Python functions
NodeSets with Python scripts, OPC UA methods and custom data models require a system-wide 64-bit installation of Python 3 for all users. A per-user installation or a Microsoft Store installation is not suitable for the service running as LocalSystem.
Setup checks whether a compatible Python installation is available. If it is missing, two options are offered:
- install Python 3.13 system-wide through Windows Package Manager
- explicitly continue the IBH OPC UA installation without Python
For a separate installation, run the following command in an administrative PowerShell:
winget install --id Python.Python.3.13 --exact --source winget --scope machine --accept-package-agreements --accept-source-agreements
Alternatively, use the 64-bit installer from python.org and select Customize installation / Install for all users.
Without Python, XML NodeSets and data models are still loaded. Types, variables, methods and references remain visible. Python read and write callbacks are not executed, and Python methods return BadNotSupported. The Nodeset menu remains visible and clearly indicates that Python is not installed.
Restart the service after installing Python later:
Restart-Service ibhopcua
Optional OPC Classic Gateway
Setup can additionally install the OPC Classic DA Gateway. The available levels are OPC UA only, OPC UA with local OPC Classic, and OPC UA with OPC Classic plus remote DCOM. Both 32-bit and 64-bit OPC Classic clients can access the 64-bit server.
Check the service and tray
Open services.msc. The IBH OPC UA Server-Client service, internally named ibhopcua, should be present and start automatically.
Administrative PowerShell commands:
Get-Service ibhopcua Start-Service ibhopcua Restart-Service ibhopcua

The tray application provides access to start, stop, the Web Configurator and diagnostics. If the icon is missing, start IBH OPC UA Server-Client from the Windows Start menu.

Open the Web Configurator
Open it from the tray menu or use:
http://localhost:48080
From another computer:
http://IP-ADDRESS-OR-HOSTNAME:48080
For an unchanged initial installation:
| User name | Password |

Change the default password immediately after the first login.
Network and firewall
| Function | Default TCP port | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Web Configurator | 48080 | Allow only from required administration networks |
| OPC UA Server | 48010 | Endpoint for OPC UA clients |
| HTTPS web access | according to configuration | Allow only when HTTPS is configured |
MQTT, the integrated OPC UA Client and online activation may require additional outgoing connections.
License activation
The former hardware-ID, email, serial-number and PIN workflow is no longer current.
Online activation
- Open System / Licensing.
- Enter the license serial number.
- Enter the associated eight-digit secret.
- Start activation and verify the license status.
Offline activation
- Generate and download
ibhlinkua-license-request.json. - Process the request using the designated licensing workflow on a computer with Internet access.
- Upload the signed JSON license file.
- Verify the license status.
The license is bound to the Windows computer. See Licensing.
OPC UA connection test
opc.tcp://IP-ADDRESS-OR-HOSTNAME:48010
Add the endpoint to an OPC UA client, verify the server certificate, select the matching security policy and authentication, browse the address space and read a test variable. Write only to variables explicitly intended for testing.
Update
- Back up the configuration.
- Download the current 64-bit setup.
- Run it as administrator over the existing installation.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Verify the service, license, certificates, projects and controller connections.
Perform a downgrade only after consulting IBHsoftec Support.
Uninstallation
Open Settings / Apps / Installed apps, select IBH OPC UA Server-Client and start uninstallation. Back up configuration, certificates and licensing information before removing remaining data.
Troubleshooting
- Setup does not start
- Check administrative privileges, digital signature, Windows version, antivirus software and system policies.
- Service does not start
- Check
services.msc, Windows Event Viewer and port conflicts.
- Tray icon is missing
- Start the tray application from the Start menu and check hidden taskbar icons.
- Web Configurator cannot be reached
- Check the service, TCP port 48080, local URL and Windows Firewall.
- OPC UA client cannot connect
- Check endpoint, port 48010, system time, certificates, security policy and user authentication.
- Online activation fails
- Check Internet access, DNS, proxy, firewall, system time, serial number and the eight-digit secret.
- Nodeset reports that Python is missing
- Verify that 64-bit Python 3 was installed system-wide for all users. A Python installation that is visible only in a user profile is not sufficient for the service.
- OPC Classic is not visible in the Web Configurator
- Open Settings / Apps / Installed apps, modify the IBH OPC UA installation and add the OPC Classic feature.
